GUNONGAN



If in India, they have Taj Mahal. So in Aceh, they have Gunongan.
Gunongan or building in the form of white mountains for the citizens of Banda Aceh has an important meaning and a deep impression. Because this building was built by Sultan Iskandar Muda king of Aceh who is famous for his queen Princess Kamaliah from Negeri Pahang, Malaysia.

In the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda, the Sultanate of Aceh reached its heyday because of its increasingly large power reaching the western coast of Minangkabau to the Malay peninsula.

Besides Sultan Iskandar Muda is also respected to Europe, where some Kings and Queen like Queen of England, Elizabeth I never send a gift to him, including Prince Maurits - the founder of the dynasty of Oranje. Gunongan building is a proof of love of Sultan Iskandar Muda to Princess Pahang who always reminded of his hometown in Pahang Malaysia is hilly.

After Sultan Iskandar Muda with Aceh troops succeeded in conquering the Kingdom of Pahang on the Malay peninsula. The king received a Princess Pahang offering named Kamaliah or better known as Putroe Phang.

It is said that then Sultan Iskandar Muda brought the princess to Aceh. Because of the beauty and noble character of the princess, Sultan Iskandar Muda finally fell in love and made him queen.

After trafficked to Aceh, Princess Kamalia always gloomy because remembered his hometown. To entertain the empress, Sultan Iskandar Muda then made a small mountain (Gunongan) behind the palace to treat the longing for his hometown in Pahang.

Gunongan is built in Taman Sari Istana also known as Ghairah Park just behind Darud Donya Sultanate Complex. The park was built as the embodiment of miniature hills surrounding Putroe Phang's palace in Pahang. Based on the book Bustanul Salatin written a great scholar of the kingdom of Aceh Darussalam century XVI AD named Nuruddin ar-Raniry mentioned the park area about 1,000 fathoms.

Gunongan is a resembling mountain or mimic topography of a three-story mountain with a peak like a tower. Gunongan bermaterial limestone, sand, and lime adhesive.

Gunongan stands 9.5 meters tall, depicting a blooming white flower that symbolizes the sincerity of love. The walls are ornately carved flowers with strands of love that are tied in the soul and are built in three levels. The first level lies above the ground and the highest level is crowned a pole stands at the center of the building. The entire form of Gunongan is octagonal (octagonal).

The entrance is called Pinto Tangkop, The shape is like anchor ship that indicates that the Sultan of Aceh has a strong marine warrior.
